What is the bloggy etiquette surrounding commenting in your own comment section?
A lot of times people will ask me questions in the comments and I'm never sure how to answer them. Most of the time I head on over to their blog and leave the answer in their comment section.
I used to comment in my comment section, but then I wonder if anyone ever reads it?
Personally I read WAY too many blogs and leave comments all over the place. I just don't have the time (or the memory) to go back and check if they have left me a message in their comments on a comment I have made.
I know Angie likes to comment to people in her comment section - so now I make a conscious effort to check back on comments I leave her.
My head hurts just from typing this.
Any comments?
P.s. Luc - you don't have a blog, so I am going to answer your comment yesterday in a blog post in the next couple of days. If you need it STAT leave your email address in my comments.

good question! I wonder the same thing...i usually leave the comment on my blog...I know that you can "subscribe" to comments...but i'm not sure if that means you'll get everyone's comments or just responses to yours? I would love to know the answer to this as well!
I don't think people come back to read answers. Like you, I follow too many people to remember who to go back to. I try to answer their question in a comment on their blog, or if they have an email address linked, I respond in an email. Hope this helps!
p.s. Link an email to your blog :) create a 99plusforever one if you dont want your personal one on here. There have been plenty of times that i've wanted to respond to your comment and cant.
@Ruthy ann - I am never sure of all the blog etiquette - I am sure I am doing it all wrong and stepping on toes all over the place!
@Chocolate lover - CHAMPION. Have set up an email account and added it. Thanks for the suggestion
I always leave responses to questions in the blog comments. Just find it easier and often people have the same question so you only have to answer it once. If its a new commenter I also go and check out their blog {if they have one} and thank them for stopping by. Often I find that there isn't an email address to respond to.
If I personally leave a question that I want an answer to I tick the box to receive notification of new comments. Sometimes though this can be annoying if it is a popular post because you will receive an email every time a new comment is posted after yours. Sometimes I will periodically check back if I remember and don't subscribe instead.
I guess it all depends. I've set up a gmail account for the blog which readers email me on, if they don't want to post in comments.
Ha! I'm glad you bought this up because I've been wondering too! I've just responded in my comments but have never been sure if that's been the 'right' thing to do. You are right about it being hard to remember to check back. I guess I'll experiment a bit longer and see what works best!
Hmmm... a tricky one. I try to visit everyone's blog who comments but I'm not as good at remembering to do it as I used to be.
I tend to wait until it seems like all the comments are over - and then just comment back to people. My rationale goes that most people who want a 'real' answer tend to email or tweet me - so most of the time the reply comment from me is just answering questions for future reference and in case anyone comes back!
Did that make any sense?? (And now you won't know where/how to answer that question!)
I have to say that before Angie I never really checked the comments section again after I left something. Some blogs have the option to select 'email me when follow ups' but then you will get all follow comments not just ones in response to yours I think.
I am a total blog freak so I check back on a lot (especially if I feel like a witty commenter that day). But bottom line if you leave a comment on someones, they will be psyched
some people email me their answers... i'm with you though - i rarely (almost never) go back and check if someone responded to a question I asked!
Thanks for the mention! I agree with Lisa, I always try to check 'email me with follow up comments' for blogger accounts, but on wordpress blogs I subscribe. But like Lisa, I usually check back on the blogs that I comment on. I don't want to leave anyone hanging, plus I like to show appreciation for our community. I don't think you all know how much of a blessing you've been.
Josh is always like, "man you got ten comments," then I say, "honey, 3/4 of those are from me" Haha! For some reason I feel like such a goober! I hate having to write people paragraphs in my comment section when I should just head over to their blog and do it, but where????? Brainstorm anyone?
Damn! I didn't check the 'email follow ups' button! Haha!
I don't know if my blog has the email me with follow up questions, but that's a good idea. I have a hard time with this too, Mrs.T! I used to write a post and then check it throughout the day, but lately, my work schedule is crazy, so I'm not in front of a computer. I'll see that someone left me a comment with a question three days earlier and then I don't comment back because I think they might not read it. I'm going to make more of an effort too.
good question!
Angie does a great job of commenting back to our comments! I on the other hand...I'm sporadic. Sometimes I comment back in the comments but sometimes I just miss it or forget. But commenters are so helpful, so I try to acknowledge their helpfulness and say thanks - in the comments.
And I never check back on my comments on other blogs unless it was a super intense discussion or the person really needed advice/help. I bookmark those in my brain and check back.
I made a conscious effort to limit the number of blogs I follow, so I actually do go back and read the comments :) I have about 30-40 blogs that I read daily (or as often as the author posts). I think I'd be overwhelmed by following more, but I know I'm missing out on some amazing blogs.
The email idea is a great one! I've received a few comment responses via email, and they always make me smile.
@Party Planner Gal- Great idea! I don't read many blogs outside of my blog roll. But I think you're right, limiting yourself to the # of blogs you read is key to keeping up with comments and discussions.
I'm addicted to replying in comments. HEWP! Haha! Even when it's not my own blog. Don't want to turn Mrs T's blog into a flood of 500 comments like APW.
And p.s. Bless, Meg. She's amazing. Don't know how she does it.
Really good question! I do sometimes go back to blogs where I left a comment to see if the blogger commented on my comment, lol. But I don't always remember to! I think the email idea Chocolate Lover suggested is a good one. I might start emailing people who ask me questions on my blog, if I don't end up answering the question in another blog post. Plus, who doesn't enjoy getting an email and knowing their comment/question didn't go unnoticed?
I usually do answer questions in the comment section of my blog, and it seems like most of the time, readers do check back to get the answer, since they know that’s the way I do it. I know because they then often leave another comment in reply. I’d say, do whether works for you and makes your life easier.
I do the same and respond to people's comments on their own blog.
Ooh you have an email address! Perfect! Now I can ask you the best places to eat around Australia. :)
I used to go back and re-read comments for this reason, but it is too time consuming and a hassle. I rarely ever respond to comments in the comment section of my blog. I typically go to their blog and respond on their most recent post. Or sometimes I e-mail them direcly if possible.
I totally have been wondering about this, too...thinking, no one comes back and re-reads the comments to see if I responded to something they said. Just silly in my opinion :)
there's a little clicky "send follow-up comments to my email" box. so if you ask a question in someone's comments, and they comment there, you can receive a notification that they did.
Sometimes I comment in my own comments, sometimes I email them a response, and sometimes I think "oh, I will reply to that comment after I do X,X,and X" and then never get around to doing it. Crap on me.
I used to comment on the other person's blog, but then the continuity seemed off there, and it was like some inside joke that the rest of their readers didn't get, which didn't seem right.
So now I comment to commenters on my own blog. I figure that it makes me seem more approachable to readers. Like if I DON'T reply, I seem a little rude, so why should others comment if I'm just going to abandon that post?
I agree though, that most commenters won't be back to read my reply. But regular readers do, so again, I want to honor and encourage them! :)
it's tricky...usually i just comment back on the persons blog so i'm sure they get the answer. but sometimes if more than one person is asking a similar question i'll answer on my own. mass confusion! :)
Yeah I never know what to do either!
I think i usually do what you do and go to the persons blog and comment there.
I leave too many comments all over the place to remember which ones to check too. Recently someone did reply to me in a comment which I didnt see till later, since she was also asking me a question, she ended up tweeting me to make sure I got it which I think works best.
Glad you loved my bag; the etsy seller was so fab to work with!
I checked back today to see if you had answered my question, but generally I'm a lurker who doesn't often comment or ask questions...
I felt so special to see my name there at the end haha!
It's not urgent, we're going in the last 2 weeks of July so I will happily await your official blog on the 'Suits: The Balinese Making of'.
Thanks so much xox
