The Eleventh Hour

In our wedding speeches my Dad told everyone about the time when I was at Uni and I had to write a business plan for a class I was taking. I had a month to do it, it needed to be 30 pages long. The night before it was due at 10pm I rang my Dad to ask for his help. He said - Sure I can help, I'll send you out some templates to fill in. You just have to add in all your information.
And I was all - Can you dictate the templates down the phone to me - it's due tomorrow.

There is something wrong with us. Both Mr B & I. It's called lastminuteitis. As in we never seem to do ANYTHING until the last possible moment. The time when you feel most stressed and you are nearly out of time - that is the time we are finally spurred into action.

I could give you a million examples. High school assignments. Studying for Uni Exams. Packing for trips.

Our wedding.

And EVERY time we say - Never again will we do this. It's too stressful.

And then EVERY time it all works out in the end.

Thus the motivation to change is just not there.

They have FINALLY given us a settlement date for our house.

We can move in this weekend. As in 2 days. We have not packed a single box.

When will we learn??

P.s. Blitzed that Uni Business plan - top marks in the class - Thanks Dad.

How exciting, I plan everything too much and still end up doing last minute stuff.
If you need any help hit me up.

Yay new house!!!! And this made me laugh because I'm exactly like that too. The only problem is, Mark is not so that makes for some interesting situations!!

Sammie said...

How exciting!!! Just take a few days of work to pack! Easy!!!

Lisa said...

hooray! good luck with the move! packing isn't fun, but settling into a new home is!

as crazy type-a as i can be, i am also a sufferer of lastminuteitis. josh does too. somehow it works for us. we do certain things months in advance, but with things like packing and cleaning and forms, we like to wait and wait and wait.

p.s. i'm still half asleep and when i saw lastminuteitis i was going to google it b/c i had never heard it before. haha! shhhhh.....

I'm supposed to doing an assignment right now, it's due tomorrow, I've had weeks to do it... and I'm reading your blog instea. As you said, if you keep getting good marks and everything works out, there's just no motivation to change! Argh!

Two days! How exciting. I am one of the organized ones who likes to have everything done in advance. A is more like you guys and turfs stuff in boxes at the last minute. His lastminutitis is slowly rubbing off on me except that I still stress about it. As you said it always turns out in the end! Hope the move goes well.

PartyPlannerGal said...

First of all, congratulations on the big move! I have the opposite problem as you - I do things too early, which can be a bad thing because it doesn't leave a lot of room for flexibility when plans change. P.S. You dad is awesome!

Giovanna said...

i have lastminuteitis too! don't worry, you'll make it happen. moves are always stressful, but once you get all those boxes in there, you can take your time making everything just right. congrats!

Bicoastal Bride said...

Wow, how exciting that you can move in! Good luck packing, and I know you'll get it done. Like PartyPlannerGal, I tend to do things too early, but I know plenty of people who work best when they're under pressure at the last minute. As long as everything works out in the end, I guess that's all that matters.

I totally feel you. I am a procrastinator extraordinaire and I don't know why!

that is impressive! good luck with the move! I am definitely more of a planner than a lastminuteitis but to each his own, right? ; )

Meghan said...

Congrats on the new house, and best of luck on the move! It always gets done in the end, right? You'll be great!

Ghenet said...

That's awesome! Congrats! The move will be fine and you'll get it all done. Then you'll be in your new home :)

I am a prize-winning procrastinator. Especially about packing. Absolutely no judgements on my part about none of your boxes packed.

But omg, I am so excited for you guys to move into your new house! Will you share pictures once you get things into some order?

Miss you, too. Hard. XOXOXOXO

Haha, I just loved the P.S.

At least you're self-aware to recognize that you're not motivated because it works out just fine. I'm always a little suspicious of people who say they work best under pressure...have they really ever tried any other way to know for sure? Not judging, I'm a huge procrastinator on a lot of things myself as well, I just think it's better for people to be honest with themselves about who they are. You own your lastminutitis!

Adventures Along The Way said...

Like Angie, I am type A and also suffer from putting off things until the very last minute. Which basically means I completely stress myself out about the fact that I am procrastinating, but somehow continue to do it anyways. Then I pull it together and do a good job and get it done in time. Resulting in the habit continuing. I am trying to break this habit...unsuccessfully at the moment. :(

Putting off things keeps life exciting...bright side, eh?

iheartkiwi said...

Ha Ha I am EXACTLY the same way!

I always say that I work best under pressure :)

Margaret said...

Oh man, I have this too! And like you said, the issue is that is *somehow* always works out... so I never learn. :P

I think you can do it, though - some people just work best under pressure!

Emmeline said...

Wow, I wait until a week before moving to pack and everybody says I'M waiting til the last minute! geez! Good luck, hope it all goes off without a hitch!

You've probably moved by now! Hope it all went well. I never pack until the last minute.

conversationpieces said...

I'm exactly the same! If it wasn't for the last minute, we'd be in trouble here... but we're always doing something/always busy so I never understand how we're always behind!

How exciting on the new house though. Looking forward to seeing it :)

You rock lady and I hope moving in wasn't too painful. You're a homeowner, yay!

Whoop for moving.

I find the impending deadline makes everything easier. Although I geekily try and trick myself by setting my deadlines early.
